Quantum StorNext Archive Conversion Utility (ACU)

The StorNext ACU minimizes the burden associated with legacy storage platform migrations and significantly reduces the expense and time it takes to move files from existing Oracle SAM-QFS legacy archives to a StorNext solution. The ACU enables SAM-QFS customers to migrate their archived data to SNSM. A SAM-QFS migration converts and synchronizes all data access, new and old data, into StorNext. This is done by replicating the legacy SAM-QFS file system namespace and structure into one or more SNSM file systems. Once completed, all files become accessible from the StorNext environment.

After the namespace conversion, StorNext determines where the archived file actually resides. StorNext knows that the data copies associated with an inode are either on the SAM-QFS or the StorNext media. Regardless of where the data resides, the user will continue to access the file in the same way. The SAM-QFS media is read by StorNext using a plug-in or "bridging" module. When a request for a file occurs and Storage Manager determines that the file copy is on SAM-QFS media, the access request will pass control and arguments to the bridging module. Through the interactions with the bridging module, the data is read from the media and placed onto the StorNext file system cache for use.

The process of moving the legacy SAM-QFS file system's namespace into StorNext and using the bridging module to connect to the legacy SAM-QFS system's tape media directly permits a customer to disconnect the server and legacy SAM-QFS equipment. There is no longer a requirement to maintain the old SAM-QFS system once the namespace is replicated and bridging module is in place. Quantum has developed a customized migration SDK including a bridging module that understands the SAM-QFS data format for directly reading the SAM-QFS tape media.
